As a mother, one of the questions I hate hearing is, “Why would you choose career over being a mother?” Let’s try turn this question around. Why would a man choose his career over being a father? Why don’t men just stay at home and leave the working to the woman?

Imagine being a parent that was forced to stay home solely to take care of the home and kids? Before you fall asleep, what do you think of? What do you dream of? As any person would, you’d do whatever within your capabilities to achieve that dream. Why do only fathers get the unquestionable freedom to go chase their dreams? What happened to the mothers?

Imagine being in a home where daughters are inspired by mothers. Where a little girl can look at her mum and say “Wow, my mum achieved her dream! So can I!” Instead of looking at her mother in disdain thinking that she has a time limit to achieving her dream. If she gets married before reaching it, that’s the end for her. There’s no second chance.

Why be a role model that clips your daughter’s wings even before she has a chance to fly? Be the role model that gives her the courage to chase after her dreams.

Also, imagine being the child of the parent who had to give up their dreams for you. I’d live the rest of my life either guilt-ridden or trying to chase her dream for her because I want to feel like a burden.

Who’s the “genius” that figured working = not taking care of the kids anyway? I’ve met a woman who raised 3 boys while working at the same time. She raised 3 of the most courteous men I know, and they would risk their lives for their mother in a heartbeat. There’s a strong bond in the family.

I’d say she did a pretty damn good job of working AND taking care of her kids.

Everything a mother does is for the sake of her children. Instead of pitting mothers against one another, we should support each other because we’re all trying to give our children the best life.
